AES: First Plant to Generate Electricity from Biodiesel

Biodiesel in the generation of electricity,
AES made it possible.

Thanks to the effort of AES Argentina engineers and technicians, who worked together with the manufacturer of AES Parana, the country now has the first power plant that can use biodiesel.

The project to adapt the technology used in AES Parana to consume this alternative fuel demanded six months of hard work of redesign, engineering and testing in one of its gas turbines.

AES Parana is a thermal power plant that uses gas and gasoil to produce electricity. It is a highly efficient combined cycle that, thanks to this innovation, is now even more versatile through the incorporation of biodiesel among the different fuels it uses.

The biodiesel used by the plant is produced in Argentina from local raw materials. Together with other alternative fuels, biodiesel makes it possible to generate electricity while taking care of the environment.

As of July 2010, AES Parana starts consuming national biodiesel in a continuous way.

It is expected a generation of 370 MWh per day from the consumption of 65,000 liters of biodiesel. In 2010, AES Parana will consume approximately 5,400,000 liters.

AES Argentina expects to duplicate the generating capacity from biodiesel of AES Parana in 2011.
